Laura Whitney-Johnson

My impulse to create new music is driven by knowledge of our oneness. Everything that we as human beings experience individually ripples through the collective body, weaving our destinies together. Because we collectively absorb each other's suffering, we can also collectively heal, and live music in a shared space is a powerful avenue to pursue this healing. I believe in music's effect on not only the body and mind, but also on the intangible spirit. I believe that sensitivity is a superpower, and that emotion is far from the enemy of the rational mind, but rather the key to unlocking new pathways of understanding. Music should live everywhere and be as diverse as the human experience, increasing as our years increase, and evolving as we evolve. I compose new works with the hope that expressing my human experience will bring solace to others, just as the music of others has always helped me to heal.
